I’ll admit it, Deadpool has never been my favourite franchise. In fact, it’s probably at the bottom of my list (though Ant-Man might be a close competitor). Yet, for some inexplicable reason, I found myself watching Deadpool & Wolverine last night.

There were moments I caught myself rolling my eyes, thinking, Why am I still watching this?

Perhaps it was sheer exhaustion from a long day that pushed me towards something light and ridiculous. The morning had kicked off with the realisation that I’d missed sending out the Teakisi newsletter on the 1st of December. It had been scheduled, of course, but being short-staffed means things occasionally slip through the cracks. I’ve made peace with it – these things happen.

So there I was, sinking into my sofa, sceptical but curious. Then came the opening scenes, and I have to say, they cracked me up. Proper belly laughs, the kind that make you feel your body physically letting go of tension. It was exactly the kind of silly escape I hadn’t realised I needed.

The film pits the irreverent Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) against the brooding Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) in a chaotic, action-packed showdown. Set against the backdrop of yet another hare-brained mission that only Deadpool could orchestrate, the unlikely duo are forced to team up to take on a mysterious new enemy with world-ending intentions. Naturally, it doesn’t take long for their wildly different personalities to clash, resulting in plenty of banter, mayhem, and, of course, over-the-top violence.

That said, the film still had its fair share of over-the-top nonsense too. At times, the crude humour and gratuitous reveals tipped dangerously close to cringe-worthy territory. There were moments I caught myself rolling my eyes, thinking, Why am I still watching this? But I’ll also admit it was entertaining in its chaotic, absurd way.

The soundtrack deserves a mention – it was playful and matched the madness unfolding on screen. The endless pop culture references and cheeky nods to other Marvel films were clever additions, even if they felt like an attempt to distract from some of the weaker plot points.

As someone who genuinely enjoys Marvel films, I’m still not sold on the Deadpool franchise. But Deadpool & Wolverine did offer something fresh, and I can’t deny that it made me laugh, even against my better judgement. If you’re in the mood for something silly and utterly unserious, give it a go. It might surprise you, or at least distract you from the stresses of life for a couple of hours.
