Inside The West End of Newcastle

Saturdays are becoming my favourite days for exploring new neighbourhoods and revisiting old haunts, and my recent visit to Fenham in Newcastle was no exception. Fenham is a residential suburb located in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, in the northeast of England. It is part of the West End of Newcastle, situated a few miles west of the city center. Fenham is primarily a residential area, characterized by a mix of housing types, including traditional terraced houses, semi-detached homes, and some modern developments. It is a popular choice for both families and students due to its proximity to Newcastle University and other educational institutions.

Like much of Newcastle, Fenham is home to a diverse population, with people from various cultural backgrounds living in the area. This diversity contributes to the vibrant and inclusive atmosphere of the neighbourhood which includes a delightful blend of culinary experiences, creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere even on a chilly, rainy day.

The neighbourhood in the west end of Newcastle continues to enchant with its diversity, culinary flair and the welcoming spirit of its residents.

A local tipped me off about a place called “My Karak Chai,” and I was eager to give it a try. The very name intrigued me – Karak Chai – a unique fusion that promised an experience beyond the ordinary. Upon entering, I was greeted by the inviting aroma of freshly brewed tea and the cozy and beautiful setting of the cafe.

My curiosity led me to order their “Apna breakfast” – an all-day service that promised to be a treat for the senses. The spread included a masala omelette, masala beans, and not one, but two classic parathas. The masala omelette was a delightful start, with its fluffy texture and a medley of spices dancing on my palate. The masala beans, perfectly cooked and generously seasoned, added a hearty touch to the meal. But it was the classic parathas that stole the show. These flaky, buttery flatbreads were not just delicious but also substantial. I could only manage to devour one, as the portion sizes were generous, to say the least.

With my appetite satisfied, I decided to venture further into the neighbourhood. I embarked on a leisurely walk through the streets of Fenham, all the way up to Two Ball Lonen. The sense of community was palpable, with families enjoying the weekend, children playing icy the roadside, and friendly smiles exchanged along the way. The green spaces, like Exhibition Park, offered a tranquil respite from the cold rain and bustling city life. It was a reminder of how Fenham strikes a balance between urban convenience and natural serenity.

Before I knew, it was 7pm but I couldn’t resist paying a visit to my favourite spot in the west end before heading home – Chaiiwala. This quirky cafe stands out in the best way possible. This modern and stylish establishment offers a fantastic menu of food and drinks that not only taste absolutely amazing but also come at remarkably reasonable prices. What always strikes me most during my visit is the warm and friendly demeanour of the staff. Their politeness and welcoming attitude adds to the overall charm of the place, making it a delightful experience from start to finish. If you’re in the area, I’d highly recommend trying them out for yourself – you certainly won’t be disappointed.

My rainy Saturday in Fenham was a memorable journey through culture, cuisine, and community. Discovering My Karak Chai added a new and exciting chapter to my Fenham adventures, proving that even on a cold and rainy day, there are hidden gems waiting to be explored. This neighborhood in the west end of Newcastle continues to enchant with its rich culture and evolving culinary scene, remains a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the heart of Newcastle’s west end, rain or shine.
