Saturday the 31st of May reminded me of the kind of joy that can’t be planned but always leaves a lasting mark. The kind that builds slowly through connection, recognition, and pride – and before you know it, you’re swept up in a moment that feels bigger than yourself. I attended BizWomen Market Day, an event dedicated to spotlighting the talents and businesses of Black women. Many of the women showcasing their work were familiar faces as they are part of Teakisi’s African Woman Collective – a safe space I belong to that uplifts, nurtures and holds African women across the North East. From the moment I stepped in, the energy was palpable. It was hot, busy, and buzzing with life, the kind of atmosphere that only a true community market can offer.
The space was full of colour and rhythm, with stalls lining the venue from wall to wall. Women were selling everything from vibrant clothing and handmade jewellery to fresh food, haircare products, body creams, makeup, bakes, drinks and everyday essentials. It felt like walking into a world where culture and creativity were not just on display but proudly lived out loud. There was no pretence, just people standing tall in their craft, sharing what they do with warmth and honesty. That’s what happens when people are trusted with the space to be themselves.
I left with more than just items in a bag. I bought a dress from CK Afrique that immediately caught my eye and picked up a jacket for my husband from Fuse Luxury, one of those pieces you just know will suit someone before they even try it on. I also stocked up on my favourite body creams from my friend Mamie of Marvellous Beauty World, who I always love supporting. These purchases weren’t just transactions; they were small acts of celebration. Of saying “I see you, and I honour your work.”

Of course, the real joy wasn’t just in the shopping. It was in the conversations, the spontaneous reunions, the head nods across the room, and the laughter that came easily. It was in seeing familiar faces doing what they love and being reminded, once again, that when Black women are given the opportunity, they will always show up, and they’ll do it with excellence.
Later that evening, I met up with my husband after his shift for dinner at Dakwala. I’d been before, but this time the food was far better, full of flavour and warmth. It was his first visit, and he loved it too. We spent the rest of the evening tucked away from the world, enjoying the peace that only comes after a full day well spent. A good meal, a quiet night in, and a film to wind down with – the perfect close to a Saturday.
A big shout-out to Lucy, the powerhouse behind the market. As someone who plans several events a year myself, I know how much time, energy, and emotion goes into pulling something like this together. The stress, the details, the back-and-forth. But I also know the reward, and this was a clear example of that. She should be incredibly proud. BizWomen Market Day wasn’t just a market, it was a reminder of what’s possible when community is centred, and when women, especially Black women are trusted to lead. There’s something beautiful about seeing people shine, and even more beautiful when it happens in your own backyard.

I’m still in awe of the Market Day Experience! As the host and someone deeply passionate about empowering Black women and their incredible crafts, I had high expectations going in — but these women surpassed them all.
Their energy was electric, their joy infectious, and their creativity on full display as they proudly showcased their products and services. The atmosphere was alive with intelligence, magic, rhythm, and vibrant connections — a truly colorful day.
Now, I’m left with the question: What’s next? How can we continue to spotlight and support these amazing women? They deserve even more.

What’s next is that you build on what you have just started which is fantastic. You wont have all the answers but learning from each step should be a guide. Already looking forward to the next one!
